I am extremely grateful for the help I received from Janet Kwan, nurse-advisor and Jo-Ann Hall, travel agent. Both were so attentive to detail, and to me–I had many questions and needs that they never hesitated to address with professionalism. My pre-surgery arrangements with Dr. Bose and Apollo Hospital Chennai went very smoothly and my travel arrangements were handled with expertise. Since this was my second surgery with Dr. Bose, and I used a different group to arrange it for me previously, I have a basis for comparison. What stood out to me was Janet’s careful and confident manner, and her concern for my comfort. She treated me with patience and respect, and always went the ‘extra distance’ to get correct answers for me. The period leading up to a hip surgery is painful and stressful–therefore having a willing advocate to smooth the long distance arrangements is so helpful. Jo-Ann had the same attitude of being concerned about my welfare and careful about the travel arrangements being made for me.

Also, as I traveled by myself for both surgeries, I noticed certain problems for a woman negotiating the Indian medical system alone. The excellent pre-surgery arrangements, with all details clarified ahead of time, made it much easier for me than if I had had to clear up problems on-the-spot in India before or after my surgery. Both doctors and nurses seemed to give more attention to the concerns of males versus females, and I was glad I had stateside advocates in case I needed them.

In spite of all the difficulties inherent in having major surgery in a foreign country/culture, I would recommend Dr. Bose to anyone considering hip surgery, and if I had to have another surgery, I would look to the Apollo Hospital system and Dr. Bose’s recommendation first. I’ve worked in U.S. hospitals for 25 years, and I got far better treatment from Dr. Bose than I would have expected to get from an orthopedic surgeon in the States, and the hospital experience was much better than I would have expected in the States.
