Types of Stem Cells
WorldMed Assist is pleased to introduce stem cell therapy as a viable option to treat a number of different medical conditions. Our medically trained staff can connect you with world-class physicians and medical facilities, who actively employ the advances promoted by stem cell research. Stem cell treatments rely on the cell’s natural ability to regenerate and differentiate according to the bodily system involved in the treatment.
For this reason, stem cell therapy is often referred to as “reparative” or “regenerative” medicine. Rather than using various medications to ease symptoms, stem cell therapy provides actual progress and solutions to medical conditions that may have been considered “untreatable” in the past.
Stem cell therapy may be a viable medical treatment option for you. If you’re interested in learning more, WorldMed Assist provides our initial consultations for free. Our online intake form can be used to contact our medically trained staff for more information.
Basic Types of Stem Cells
Generally speaking, human stem cells are classified into two different groups: Embryonic Stem Cells, and Adult Stem Cells.
As the title implies, embryonic stem cells are derived from human embryos or fetuses. Accordingly, embryonic stem cell treatments have generated much controversy due to the involvement of human embryos. Even embryonic stem cell research has raised controversy due to the research methods applied to embryos. Related stem cell types include amniotic stem cells derived from amniotic fluid, and umbilical cord stem cells. Due to religious and ethical concerns, WorldMed Assist does not provide treatments based on embryonic stem cells or embryonic stem cell treatment.
The second type of human stem cells is called adult or somatic stem cells. Unlike embryonic stem cells, adult stem cells are harvested from adult sources. Often times the source of adult stem cells is actually the patient themselves, in which case the stem cells are called “autologous” stem cells.
Types of Adult Stem Cells
There are three basic subcategories of adult stem cells:
- Bone Marrow Stem Cells: These are typically extracted (“harvested”) from the patient’s femur or iliac crest
- Adipose Tissue Stem Cells: These are a type of lipid cell that is extracted through means such as liposuction
- Umbilical Stem Cells: These are obtained through umbilical cord blood that remains in the cord after the childbirth process. The cells can be used for treating various genetic disorders, and are used for treatment in countries such as China
- Blood Stem Cells: These are extracted through a process called “pheresis”, wherein the blood is filtered through a machine which extracts the stem cells. This usually requires an outside donor source
A majority of stem cell therapy treatments rely on bone marrow stem cells, especially in cases requiring stem cell transplants for blood conditions. Stemcell research is expanding to encompass more and more sources of adult stem cells.
Stem Cell Therapy Benefits
Benefits of stem cell therapy are numerous, and include: reduce incidences of side effects, treatment rejection, and repeat treatment sessions; wide application for numerous medical conditions; and expanding availability as stem cell research progresses.
WorldMed Assist is a leader in medical tourism, providing various medical packages to countries where stem cell therapy is available as a treatment option. Our trained staff is available to assist our clients throughout the entire treatment process. We present medical treatment packages that are unique and tailored to our clients’ individual needs. Although stem cell treatments have yielded a high degree of success for many patients, the availability of stem cell therapy depends on the patient’s medical condition and history of previous treatments.
