Usages of Bone Marrow Stem Cells
Bone marrow stem cells are used mainly in the treatment of serious illnesses like cancer, immunodeficiency conditions, and cardiovascular diseases. The actual medical procedure of bone marrow stem cell transplantation is classified in the fields of oncology and hematology. Common usages of bone marrow stem cells include treatments for:
- Various cancers of the blood and/or bone marrow (like multiple myeloma)
- Solid tumor cancers
- HIV and other auto-immune diseases
- Hematological diseases and malignancies including sickle cell, lymphoma, and leukemia
- Many other types of conditions, including anemia, radiation sickness, and T-cell disorders
Currently, the usages of bone marrow stem cells continue to widen as stem cell research continues in the U.S. and worldwide.
The Advantages of Stem Cell Therapy
Stem cell therapy is associated with many benefits for the patient, including:
- Lower occurrences of treatment rejection, since the stem cells are drawn from the patient’s own body
- Reduced potential for side effects, especially those associated with heavy medication
- Stem cells have the ability to both regenerate and differentiate, meaning that they can adapt themselves to a number of different bodily systems and functions
About Bone Marrow Stem Cell Transplantation
Bone marrow is one of the three main sources of adult stem cells (the other two sources being adipose tissues and blood). Bone marrow stem cells are extracted through a process called “harvesting”, where the marrow is obtained from the patient’s own bone (usually the iliac crest or femur bones). The patient’s own stem cells are then reintroduced into their own body, where they perform such regeneration functions to help heal damaged or diseased tissues.
Thus, bone marrow is known as an “autologous” source of adult stem cells, meaning that the stem cells are obtained through the patient’s own bodily sources rather than through an outside source. Autologous stem cell sourcing is becoming more and more preferable over practices such as embryonic stem cell treatment and embryonic stemcell research, where the cells are drawn from embryo sources. Due to the various concerns over ethics and religion, WorldMed Assist does not utilize treatments involving embryonic stem cells.
