Lymphedema Treatment in Belgium
Lymphedema is commonly known as “heavy or swollen legs” or “thick arm”. Lymphedema is caused by an accumulation of fluid in the limbs due to damaged lymph vessels. The lymph vessels are a fluid transport system in the body that works closely with the blood system.
However, unlike the blood system, the lymph system is not self-propelled and only serves to drain the lymph system. If the lymph vessels are damaged or are malfunctioning, the lymph can collect in various places throughout the body. This can cause swelling of the tissues and can hinder the body’s normal defenses against infections.
Lymphedema can result after traumatic accidents, surgeries, radiation, or skin infection. It is estimated the about 35% of patients who have undergone breast surgery or radiation treatment are threatened with the risk of lymphedema.
About Lymphedema Micro-Surgical Treatments and Procedures
Lymphedema treatment generally involve a six-step procedure consisting of: Intake, Assessment, Intensive Conservative Treatment, Micro-surgical Treatment, Intensive Recovery, and Follow-up. The first two steps, Intake and Assessment, provide the patient with a thorough examination, diagnosis, and roadmap for treatment. Intensive Conservative Treatment consists mainly of manual lymph therapy combined with compression therapy and bandaging.
The fourth step, Micro-surgical Treatment, is considered to be a major breakthrough and the core of the overall treatment. Microsurgery for lymphedema is where lymph vessels are connected to local veins in order to restore lymph drainage. This achieved through advanced micro-surgery techniques deep within the skin tissues. After this, the patient will have ample time for Recovery (usually involving wearing medical stockings), and will be monitored during our staff’s thorough Follow-Up process.
The patient can expect to spend about 5 days in the hospital after the surgery, followed by about a week of Intensive Recovery. Swelling of the limbs is reduced immediately upon surgery.
